Ryan Crowder is a San Francisco dweller and music gobbler. Sometimes he plays parties, and releases a series of mixes each year highlighting the newest and gooiest of what musicians have to offer. He's in love with SF's local queer art performance and drag scenes, comic culture, has been known to pat a couple bear bellies and digs any op for music and dancing. He is also an avid crocheter and seamster, and enjoys making things and stuff. Lots of times he shares his music dreams and nightmares through "the social media". He can be found on Twitter (@Crowderism) or at Sissboombah.tumblr.com.

Intro:

I like pop music. But I like pop music that is a little more complicated than to be expected. Tho I admit its not that surprising how much i like synthpop in its many forms, but I don't claim to be highbrow. In addition to normal dancing I also enjoy sit dancing. Mellow things that just flow along are really nice too. I am sort of perpetually attracted to the catchy hook and can't deny how much pleasure it give me. So I went with that.

While listening to this mix tape I've made you, imagine us dancing to this stuff. It could be a fun time no? Or if you prefer, maybe we could just hang out and laugh around a table with some besties with this on. The 80s can be irresistible and I think you will find sounds based in high energy pop of that decade shaped this mix. Personally, this is a mix I like bringing with me on walk around the city. It turned out to be a lot about risky lovin', I don't really see how that happened. But here ya go!

TRACKLIST:

1. Margaret Berger - 4-E.V.E.R L.O.V.EMs. Berger came out of nowhere for me. She carries the pop torch well tho don't you think? I also like when people spell things in songs.
2. Those Dancing Days - I'll Be YoursFrom the latest album by these Swedish young ladies. I like the genre combo package they serve up as they earnestly pop out their feelings. Ride the chill wave of Chazwick Bundick (yes that is his amazing name). Off a nice EP earlier this year. 4. Queen of Hearts - Shoot the Bullet This is totally the track I am in love with at the moment. I imagine a lot of pronounced hip back and forth happening whenever I listen. I also like to mouth the words in front of a mirror.I just love how this song starts. This is one of my fave albums and its one that mucho younger folk have surprisingly never heard of. Jimmy Somerville's queer political messaging just does it for me ok?Another all lady band who bring it. Their tracks build and change up in the most satisfying of ways. Solid live show that makes one feel things.Epic emotional realness realized. And can you sing like this guy? If you can please send me a voice note as I would really like to hear this.Amsterdam based dude who likes some discoey electronic pop. I enjoy the booping.9. Spank Rock (w/ Santigold) - Car SongI like them. I like her. I want them to be my friends maybe. I find this really fucking fun.10. Michael Sembello - Automatic Man Dude who wrote the hit Maniac. I know, you never would have guessed! It sounds so different! Bite into the cheese, hold onto it and don’t let go.11. Zeigeist - Fight With Shattered Mirrors Arty electro pop band of the mid-aughts. I wish I could have seen one of their art heavy live sets. But no worries, I am fine listening to this and the sharp dance moves that result from the chorus.I felt like I needed some god damned indie pop on this mix or I was gonna feel queasy. Who doesn't like this breezy tune? Another newish catchy pop gem of a song. It's chorus suction cups to your brain.Phantogram’s latest has been a really great listen over the last couple months. I know it caught fire on the internets, but this song is so good regardless of how much I think about listening to Beach House while it is on.15. MEN - Who Am I to Feel So Free (feat. Antony)Vocals from Antony on a track representing queer political poppy dance music of the the timez.? A man that owned my heart this year. Queer sexy get down portion of mix engage.17. Jenny Wilson - Love Ain't Just a Four Letter Word A lot of peeps may not know her, but they should. Well I guess her stint providing some vocals for the Knife's most popular track got her some attention. But still... her lyrics are awesome.

Luke Williams - San Francisco

We haven't met? That's probably because I spent the last year hidden in an office, running Claude VonStroke's record labels; dirtybird and mothership. I was going to school full time and I was trying to keep my partner who has to live and put up with me. I wasn't out much beyond the label events.

When you're asked what kind of music influences your taste or sound, it's a hard thing to answer. I do like big, jackin' bass lines, but it really depends on the mood or setting that you're in, right? I like quite a range of music, so this is just a chance to shine light on a part of it. So, it flows, and it has just enough bass to keep it curious.

Think change of seasons. I hope you enjoy it.

Hyena Stomp - London, UK

http://soundcloud.com/hyena-stomp

Hyena Stomp is a project from Italian born/London based duo Severino and Nico De Ceglia. With no doubts two of the finest export from their native country the pair have become in the years major figures in the London club scene. Severino is part of the Horse Meat Disco crew. Their parties are a real institution in the London nightlife. From the legendary tents at Glanstobury and Lovebox festival to their monthly residency in Berlin and Lisbon, regular apparition in New York, San Francisco, Ibiza, Tokyo… they have taken over the world with their disco influenced sound.Nico De Ceglia on his side has been scouting and pre-selecting for Pete Tong’s legendary show on BBC Radio 1 for the last 10 years constantly tipping him on the more alternative and underground bits. A man that knows his music. His infamous CODEX parties, that also saw Severino has one of the resident DJs, were another institution in the London club scene for many years at the still missed legend of a club that was The End. Crossing their paths so many times in the years it was inevitable that the two would have moved their long term friendship and mutual respect in the studio. Sharing inspirations that move from Kraftwerk to Apparat via Prince, from the Detroit sound to the cosmic and Afro one to the early house beats and classical music… Hyena Stomp is an example of the musical appetite of the two Italians. With remixes for Tevo Howard & Tracey Thorn, DJ Hell, The 2 Bears, Ali Love and releases on the much respected Rebirth Records, Hyena Stomp are working on new material pushing their music explorations further. Keep an eye open for their versatile and much demanded DJ sets equally moving sweaty dark basement clubs to sunny rooftop parties.

Hard Ton - Venice, Italy

Hard Ton is the XXL disco diva of the XXI Century! Italy is known for its big singers but this one really breaks the mould. His Sylvester styled falsettos conjure up the smoky, poppers-fuelled dancefloors of Hi-NRG mixed with a completely contemporary sound of accelerated beats and screaming acid basslines. Using, exclusively, analogue and vintage gear from the 303, 606, 707, Oberheim DMX, Korg Monopoly, MS20, Prophet V5, the list goes on and is a calling card to any gear-nerd.

But the music never becomes stiff or contrived, in fact it always remains fun, as expected when you play with equipment that lives and dies by its own unpredictable rules.

With his 150kg, Hard Ton is a Giorgio Moroder low-fat grooves model meeting a heavyweight Chicago Trax queen machine.

Demetri Moshoyannis AKA DJ DAMnation grew up listening to new wave in middle and high school, worshiping the greatest artists of the time. Favorites consisted of Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Blancmange, OMD, and many more. That said, he always favored the one-hit wonders that made that scene so special.

When he came out in the NYC club scene of the late ’80s, spaces like Tunnel, Mars, Limelight, Roxy and Sound Factory gave him a crash course in NYC underground house and early techno music. He’ll still play an old favorite or two.

As a result, his current sound is a blend of the indie pop and house genres with hints of others as well (e.g. nu disco, acid house), relying heavily on his favorite remixers (e.g. Azari & III, Tensnake, Punks Jump Up, In Flagranti) as the basis for his sets.

He serves as the Executive Director of Folsom Street Events, and he spins weekly at the Powerhouse as well as many one-off events around San Francisco.

I'm struck by the vulnerability of modern music.  Either it's so classic it hurts or played out--until it hurts. Old and new are measured in time release. While putting playlists together in sound designing there has cultivated a cross-section of reference points, from deep soul to techno, vintage rock to the undefinable, from the infinite disco to the infinitesimal. Beyond genre is connection. To me dancing exemplifies what my body defies...the realization of movement. Every breakthrough in sound design moves me to listen. With a determination to relate a community of dancers, listeners, and producers, there is sought an active appreciation of a single audiophile and his spintuitive craft.

It started with humble beginnings from around 20 years ago while traveling and dancing the West Coast, Tennessee, & Hawai'i, wild outdoor gatherings and dj parties. Growing up in California immersed me in timeless R&B, early hip hop, and synth heavy New Wave.  San Francisco and Portland, OR were home to self-taught, teeth-cutting, small-scale party throwing; including Spintuition (SF) and Vas-o-line (PDX) then eventually Coinslot (NYC) leading to a current residency so called Marinate, at Easternbloc in New York City, with the party's one-year anniversary in September. Being an active member and supporter of the artist/performance community, I strive to enliven dancefloors and multifaceted soundtracks. This is a live studio mix from home in Brooklyn.

Kate Wildblood and Queen Josephine are true house connoisseurs. About to celebrate twenty years of playing together both behind and in front of the decks (!) Wildblood and Queenie have seen that, done that and provided the soundtrack. Brighton based they love their home town and its vibrant club scene, having DJ’ed at some of the cities finest clubs including Wild Fruit, Sunday Sundae, Rebel, DSD, Audio, Together, Cash Queen, Monkey, Disco Deviant, Queer Nation and the Wild Fruit Dance Tent at Brighton Pride.

Queen Josephine is clubbing royalty, enjoying a regal reputation for producing majestic sets of the sweetest kind. Her Blitz kid days maybe well behind her but her love of a decent soulful, disco and funked-up groove is as passionate today as it’s ever been. Wildblood is exactly what she says on the tin. (Almost.) A bassline junkie Kate is a lass in love with electronica, disco and house, be it tech, funky, strung out or jackin’!

Wildblood and Queen Josephine. Clubbing royalty of the honest kind whose love of disco strings and decent grooves ensure they remain house kids all life long.

DJ HUGO SANCHEZ

SUBWOOFER resident DJ and promoter Hugo Sanchez is a multidimensional explorer of the musicsphere, which he tirelessly roams as a DJ, musician, producer and promoter. His experience as a DJ starts with the memorable Roman club night AGATHA, and goes on with COQ MADAME, the first queer party in Rome, which Señor Sanchez started in 2000.  For three years now has been organising and producing DISCOLOOSER$, a connoisseur night hopelessly devoted to the incredibly strange world of disco music. Besides DISCOLOOSER$ and SUBWOOFER, Sanchez, in association with the illustrious analogue poet Rodion, is presently producer of ROCCODISCO, an independent record label dedicated to dance music and avant-garde electronics. Again with Rodion, he is one half of ALIEN ALIEN, a duo producing a sort of gloomy, evil house music. Nicknamed "El Tremendizmo", Hugo Sanchez mixes his various influences into a very peculiar and bizzarre style, halfway between electropop and outrageously erotic techno-house, with a lethal dose of funk spread all over. He named himself after a famous Mexican football player who used to paw his team-mate butts every time he scored a goal.

jamie o'sullivan - Portland, Maine

http://www.mixcloud.com/jamieosullivan/

I have only been djing for a short while. About 6 years. I Currently host and dj(with guests) a monthly party called LOVE. A deep house, tech house and deep techno party at Flask Lounge in Portland, ME. The first party I had was called Laptop Lounge. Along with my friend Sean Carroll (a huge source of my music) we played an eclectic mix one Thurs. every other month at the Whiteheart in Portland. It lasted for about 3 years. I have, however, had 36 solid years of life on this planet and have been inspired by music right from the get go. Like a lot of kids growing up in the 80’s I was into rap music, break dancing, graffiti and skateboarding. While in the experimental high school years I was open to all kinds of new things. In 1991, Rave had just hit Maine and after my first, that was it. I continued to go to raves all over New England into the mid 90’s. Even hitting some in the Northwest while in college in Olympia, WA. Towards the end of the 90’s I met a dj/ dancer who became my boyfriend for 4 years. He had an enormous record collection and I got quite the history lesson in disco, house, and techno. He and I spent A LOT of time going dancing. We had friends in NYC and hit up Body and Soul as much as we could. Through those years I got to see how this music and culture was SO much more than just the Rave scene. Watching some of those NYC dancers just blew my mind!! After our time together I continued to seek out music and dancing. My djing is a natural progression of my life. It HAD to happen. I had been listening to this music for so long, songs mixed all by themselves in my head. I love it with all my heart and hope you enjoy this mix……some new stuff I’m into with a few old favorites. -jamie o’sullivan

MIXED TAPE

Scott Moore (Limp Wrist) - San Francisco

mutantrock@gmail.com

This is not about me. This is about music. Well, I guess that it is about me, since I selected
the tracks on this mixtape. My obsession with music began with a stack of KISS records and a
Superman record player in 1979. A teacher introduced me to the D.I.Y. punk scene when I was
a senior in high school. I started booking shows for touring bands in the tiny backwoods town
where I made friends with people who made the music, produced fanzines, and ran record labels
out of their bedrooms. Punk, to me, is about music, sharing ideas, and building a community that
exists outside of the control of an industry that only has monetary interests. Being a faggot in a
hick town drew me to music that was a protest to the environment and attitudes where I grew
up. Eventually I moved around to a few different cities and landed in San Francisco a little over 3
years ago and I play guitar in Limp Wrist and Needles. Enough of that…

Most of the tracks on here are from the late 70’s-early 80’s when the music was a little more
tuneful and a little easier on the ear. I wanted people to actually listen to it…ha. Not all of it
necessarily falls in the “punk” spectrum, but it at least has an aesthetic of some nerds making
outsider music in their basement.

Who needs vapid, money hungry pop stars like Britney and Gaga claiming that they, “love their
gay fans,” and icon worshiping queens telling me whose boot to lick? Gary Floyd was a cross-
dressing, abrasive, unapologetic chubby fag who fronted The Dicks in what I am sure was a
rather unfriendly Texas environment in the early 1980’s. The Germs’ Darby Crash was a closeted
homo with a hard-on for a big-dicked boy named Donny. Had he ever come to terms with his
sexuality, he may not have OD’d and died.

A coworker of mine and former resident of The Farm, which was a collective space in San
Francisco where people lived and (legendary) touring punk bands would play, has told me many
tales of homosexuality from these early days of the late ’70s and early 80’s punk scene which
is probably richer with similar tales that have never been documented. You can keep Liza and
Kylie…this is the queer history that I am interested in.

Anyway…PLAY IT LOUD!

Track List:

-Brat – “Attitude” (L.A. 1980) Catchy East L.A. Latina punk tunes and an amazing voice. I saw them a few years ago and she still sounded great.

-The Comes – “Panic” (Japan 1983) The Japanese have a way of ingesting music and spitting it back out with so much more intensity.

-GG Allen and the Jabbers – “Don’t Talk to Me” (New Hampshire 1980) He was an awful piece of human trash who did wretched things to women and smeared shit on himself. Unfortunately, his first few records were masterpieces.

-The Dicks – “Young Boys Feet” (Texas 1983) Gary Floyd singing about molesting little boys feet in a shoe store.

-Germs – “Land of Treason” (Los Angeles 1980) It was hard to pick one Germs song to play.

-Feederz – “Jesus Entering From the Rear” (Arizona 1984) Offensive and catchy. The Feederz Do You Ever Feel Like Killing Your Boss? LP is a classic.

-Jay Reatard – “My Shadow” (Memphis, TN 2006) Jay Reatard was a prolific musician who died early. The Blood Visions LP was his take on the Adverts, but with a more aggressive recording and hyper songwriting style.

-Adverts – “Male Assault” (UK 1979) A creepy little number off of their second LP.

-Wire – “Outdoor Miner” (UK 1978) Another band that it was hard to choose which track to play. I love the melodies in this one.

-Masshysteri – “Beskjunta” (Sweden 2010) Their LP was a favorite of mine from last year. This is my favorite track. I think it is the mood that the keyboard line sets in the background that always makes this one stick out.

-Crisis – “Alienation” (UK 1981) Crisis was the left wing punk band that Douglas P. and Tony Wakeford were in before they started Death in June. Douglas P. still does DIJ and Tony Wakeford turned into a fat nazi piece of shit.

-A Touch of Hysteria – “The Rules” (UK 1983) This was recorded in 1983 and the band only released it on a demo cassette and it was released on vinyl in 2006. The drummer, who went on to be in Lush and Hard Skin, committed suicide in 1996. This is a stranded on a dessert island record for me.

-The Mob – “Mirror Breaks” (UK 1983) The Mob are a personal favorite. The lyrics, music, and graphics were perfectly crafted to paint a bleak story of life in a capitalist society without sounding dogmatic or impersonal. This is the A side of their last single.

-Specters – “Stasi” (Canada, 2010) A little Joy Division, a little bit of The Mob…a very good LP.

-Dezerter – “Co Oni Nam Daja?” (Poland, 1989) Dezerter are still an active band today. They operated while Eastern Europe was under strict communist rule. Many of the bands from this time had records on what i believe are state run labels such as Polton, Tonpres, and Arston. All profanities where erased from the records with a very loud "bleeeeep". This track has a really mechanical sound that seems very indicative of the world in which they lived.

-Oppenheimer Analysis – “Cold War” (UK 1982) Minimal Wave is a record label in NYC that specializes in putting out high quality vinyl releases of home-recorded synth bands from the late 1970’s and early 80’s. Most of which had previously only been released on cassette. I love how catchy and dance-y this is while at the same time sounding totally cold and unaffected.

-Turquoise Days – “Visions Blurred” (Channel Islands 1981) Another Minimal Wave release. The synth and guitar lines…the chorus…I love this song.

-Eleven Pond – “Watching Trees” (Rochester. NY 1986) San Francisco label, Dark Entries, who specializes in releasing 80’s underground synth and post-punk recordings as well as contemporary bands of the same style, re-released this bands LP. You should be swaying around your room instead of reading right now.

-Thomas Leer – “Private Plane” (Scotland 1979) Carried by a motorik beat and a percussive bass line, the airy keyboards flow through this to create a driving track.

-Chrome – “Abstract Nymphoid” (SF 1979) One of the most interesting bands to come out of San Francisco in the early ’80s. Total weirdo alien psychedelic electronic punk.

-Sonic Youth – “Swimsuit Issue” (NYC 1993) Kim Gordon’s feminist anthem that is written from the perspective of a female employee of Geffen Records, the bands label at the time, who has been sexually harassed by her boss. The music is aggressive, noise driven, and perfectly matches the ugly subject matter. "I'm not giving you head in a Sunset bungalow."

-Fastbacks – “No Lethal Hope” (Seattle, 1982) This band made some really catchy songs that get stuck in my head whenever I hear them. The guitar interplay catches my attention every time.

-Jesus and Mary Chain – “Inside Me” (Scotland 1985) I am not really sure how this band got signed to a major label in 1985. So much feedback!

-Lebenden Toten – “Near Dark” (Portland, OR 2008) Lebenden Toten are my favorite active band. Total distorted noise guitar carried by solid bass and drums that create a rhythmic danceable punk tunes. Noise and Message

GFN taps into the roots of our generation to dig deep and deliver up sounds informed by the past but with sights always set on the road ahead. We waved, we raved, we rocked.

Jen "popgirl" 23 - (Mama's House, Quantum Artists) - Sacramento, CA

http://www.popgirl23.com
Facebook

Mixing old tracks with new tracks successfully during a live set is a quality that's slowly
disappearing in the age of fast-fire downloads, but a very important one that Jen is known
and respected for within the larger underground House and Techno community. Taking
dancers on a true journey is another lost art. Jen's sets are all about that journey....
In 1983, at the age of 12, Jen “popgirl” 23 spent a summer in Germany visiting family. While
most youngsters were attending summer camp, Jen's uncle introduced her to breakdancing
and the music of Kraftwerk, Nu Wave, and pioneering electro style hip hop. This marked the
start of a lifelong absorption of Electronic Dance Music.

Moving forward to 1992 New England and Jen's hosting underground parties in the woods of
Maine – “outlaws”, as they came to be known. She'd gather a group of fellow party people,
beatniks, rednecks, hippies and metal heads to drive a Uhaul & sound system deep into the
backwoods away from the prying eyes of normal society. These parties would go on all night
among the trees and under the stars - often going until noon and becoming quite legendary.
The soundtrack from these parties was filled with quality deep house, electro and acidy
techno, influencing her start at DJing in 1997.

In 2001 Jen scored her first regular residency, bringing those underground sounds into the
clubs of her home state and fusing it with the funky clubby house sound popular at the time.
This success has lasted for over a decade, earning herself awards and recognition for her role
in the ever continuing developing the region's EDM scene. She's performed across the United
States as well as across the pond in both the United Kingdom and the Italian island of
Sardinia. Not too shabby for a DJ who's humble beginnings began deep in the backwoods of
Maine playing for a bunch of freaks.
with that… Enjoy the ride.

Tim Strong (Hard French, Dial UP)

Tim Strong likes to throw crazy parties like Hard French and Dial Up. He's not sure if he could stop dancing because he has never tried.Touch me I’m going to Scream part 2 - My Morning Jacket
There’s a certain point in this song where if you don’t already have it turned all the way up you’re going to wish that you did.  It’s the perfect track for your late night, moldy basement, scary banshee Halloween party.  Is banshee an offensive term in this context?  If so, I apologize. Synthesizers, piano, pretty singing lady.

Stand by Me Lord - The Horses

Gospel AND house music?  I’m a total sucker for both and this shit gets real special.

I’ll Take Care of You - Gil Scott-Heron

It might come across as though Gil is singing this song to a stranger in a bar but I’m pretty sure he’s singing it to anyone who thinks that he might be.  Everything is going to be OK and Jamie xx wants you to dance about it.

Yearning - Black Van
Never thought this was possible but this song makes riding MUNI bearable.

You Gave me Love - Crown Heights Affair
A scary man once told me that this song was a secret and wouldn’t tell me what it was.  It still showed up in my life somehow.  There are, like, hundreds of incredible moments in the song.  Hella cute.

Everywhere - Fleetwood Mac
Pschemagik sprinkled a little bit of unicorn glitter on there.

We Have Been Waiting You - Pional
“E.X.C.I.T.E.D. we have been, we have been waiting for you.”  Waiting for me at the dance party or some subterranean colony for stranded aliens?

You Can Dance - Chilly Gonzales
This song makes me want to take a 5 day nap.  J/K!!!!  It makes me wanna dance.  FOREVER!

Skydiver - Neon
There’s a whispering lady out there somewhere who really likes this song.

dabecy - San Francisco

dabecy.com

SF Bay Area native, Darren M. Cutlip, under the name dabecy, began creating avant-garde music and sound art in 1987, at the age of 16. Influenced and inspired by acts such as Cabaret Voltaire, Kraftwerk, Coil, Throbbing Gristle and Nurse With Wound, Darren began self-releasing his recordings on cassette. Later, backed by legendary SF noise pioneer Elden M, who is most noted for his Allegory Chapel releases, Darren won acclaim for several successful releases.

Prized as much for the sophisticated music and atmospheres as for the unique and creative packaging of his releases, Darren soon found himself sharing an audience with seminal noise act The Haters.

In the early 90’s, after being exposed to clubs and raves such as Big Heart City, Toon Town, Mr. Floppy’s Flophouse, and later, parties such as Come-Unity, A Rave Called Sharon and The Gathering, Darren became hooked on house, acid house, and techno. When he heard the track LFO by LFO on WARP Records at Mr. Floppy’s Flophouse he was completely blown away. That moment was the catalyst for him to reinvent his sound, using the famous Roland TR-808 and TR-909 drum machines and the inimitable TB-303 bassline synthesizer.

Meeting Adam Douglas of SF-based Acid House group 303 Terrorists led to Darren submitting a demo to San Francisco’s Flask Records - a division of pioneering ambient label Silent Records.

In 1993, electronic composer Kim Cascone, then head of Silent, impressed with the demo, signed Darren and promptly placed him in several compilations. Cascone also produced Darren’s first full-length release, “Logarithmic”, under the moniker Dreams Without Number. “Logarithmic” landed in the Top 10 on London’s KISS FM ambient chart, alongside acts such as the Orb and Future Sound of London.

Throughout the mid to late 90’s Darren developed his live performances, and became a fixture at many underground raves and parties in the Bay Area. In the late 90‘s, Darren was the first electronic act to play the famous San Francisco jazz club, Cafe du Nord.

In 1999 Darren released “Autacoid” on Solid Grooves Records, sharing the Trax Cafe compilation imprint with a select group of the Bay Area’s top electronic talent, including techno legends Kit Clayton and Chris Jackson, prolific artist Lucas Rodenbush, DoBox label head Derrick Scott, and many others.

After a needed break from the demands of the nightlife scene, Darren reemerged in December of 2008, creating the popular ELECTRONIC MUSIC BEARS (EMB) Facebook group and podcast. Reinvigorated by the success of emb, Dabecy is once again behind the decks, setting off dance floors at Public Works, EndUP, Honey Soundystem, and Bearracuda.

EMB features DJ talent from around the world each week, and strives to represent the spectrum of electronic music.

DJ Craig C - Denver, CO

http://www.peacebisquit.com
http://www.myspace.com/craigcmusic

The progression of dance music relies heavily on the pioneers of sound who are constantly altering, changing, and evolving. Through clubs, radio, remixes, compilations and media exposure, dance music continues to infiltrate the music business and create legends out of the global purveyors of the music - the deejays.

Producer and remixer Craig Christensen, aka DJ Craig C, combines his knowledge of classic soul, jazz, rock and dance with versatility and appreciation for both the deep underground grit and prime-time energy of dance floors with DJ residencies that span the globe. He has recorded and produced popular remixes, favorite bootlegs, and sly mashups for a staggering array of artists including: Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Yoko Ono, Beyoncé,  Cazwell, Solange, Kelly Rowland,  Blake Lewis, Jody Watley, Musiq Soulchild, Scissor Sisters, Amanda LePore, Mary J. Blige, Le Tigre, The Killers, RuPaul, Stevie Nicks, the B-52s, Lady Gaga and Ultra Nate'. He has recorded and produced for artists such as Norma Jean Wright (of Chic fame) and is also the man behind Angie Stone's club classic "I Wish I Didn't Miss You Anymore."

"Since I like so many styles of music, I would end up killing myself trying to put them into one mix. Now I find that if the project sounds tougher I go with that, or if it needs to be deep, I go deep. Sometimes you start out one way and it ends up sounding completely different when you're done"

Born in Denver, Craig's infatuation with music stems from early childhood. Raised on Motown (The Supremes and Marvin Gaye), jazz (Herb Albert and Herbie Hancock), disco divas (Donna Summer and Cheryl Lynn) and rock (Jefferson Airplane and Santana), Craig's wide range of musical influences helped shape his own eclectic sound, "I'll always love a diva, but I'm a sucker for a nice set of rock power chords or some edgy jazz. I think it's really cool when you hear a dance record and all of a sudden there's a wicked rock guitar solo or a pop record with some crazy jazz progression. For me that's where it's at ... it doesn't get any better."

After developing his DJ skills, Craig's desire to play for a crowd led him to a bar called Colfax Mining Company where he landed his first gig. From there he began playing at various venues throughout the city. In 1992, he quickly established a residency at club Compound, which truly jumpstarted his career. With a line around the block, Craig's Sunday night party drew crowds from all around the world. With guest deejays from Derrick Carter to DJ Disciple, and vocalists like Joi Cardwell and Ron Carroll, Craig's arrival on to the dance scene was as smooth and refreshing as his sets. "Compound" was not only a catalyst for Craig, but also the origin behind Pound Boys--the name of his partnership with DJ Dealer. Beginning with a night called "Sweatbox," this union led to a five year run at this club doing four nights a week. Since then DJ Craig C. has wowed dance floors all over the world, including regular stints in the U.K., New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.

From the club, Craig's extensive musical knowledge, instincts, and associations with top-deejays and vocalists allowed him to make the transition into production. His desire to create put Craig in front of the studio's mixing console. As an engineer, Craig pioneered a distinct sound for the Pound Boys. Being a creative force, he also began co-writing songs with various musicians and vocalists (including Musiq Soulchild) and doing production arrangements. Craig found his niche in the creative process. After much success with the Pound Boys affiliation, remixing chart toppers such as: "Joi Cardwell - Pray" (First ..1 on Billboard), Mary J. Blige (..1 on Billboard), Usher and Whitney Houston his reputation reached new heights.  Other noteworthy re-edits include Faith Evans, "I Don't Need It", Janet Jackson's "Slow Love," Beyonce vs. Donna Summer's "Naughty Love", Keyshia Cole's "Never" , Don Ray's "Standing in the Rain," Ann Nesby "Let Your Will Be Done", Gladys Knight's "Bourgie Bourgie" and Sergio Mendes' "Roda."

Performing alongside deejays like Little "Louie" Vega, Eric Morillo, Angel Moraes, DJ Duke, Roger S., Todd Terry, Derrick Carter and Tony Humphries, Craig has provided the grooves for internationally renown fashion designers like Vivian Westwood (and the NAHA awards in Las Vegas). He has played at London's legendary Ministry of Sound and the 15-year old Queer Nation as well as all over Australia. In the States, he's performed at Miami's annual Winter Music Conference- party for Defected Records/Susu/South Port Weekender, Subliminal Records,' and San Francisco's "Devotion."

"The reward is being able to play for different crowds around the world. It's amazing to see that in every language or culture, the people are always ready to party. That's what keeps me going ...

After spending a year in San Francisco and two years in London Denver is the place Craig calls home. With a regular gig at The Denver Wrangler; Sweet, his Saturday night residency and the legendary Sunday beer bust  Craig has found that playing for crowds he knows and feeding off their energy only makes him a better deejay and producer. Feeling the vibe and connecting with the audience is exhilarating, a rush that keeps Craig spinning.  Continuing in his production, remix and re-edit work, Craig is currently working on his debut solo album which incorporates rock, dance, pop and vocalists.  In addition, with his continued production and remix management with Peace Bisquit, Craig is enjoying success and looking forward to the future. Josh Cheon grew up 15 minutes outside of New York City, and more specifically The Bank, a goth club that laid the foundations for his obsession with dark synthesizer driven music. He soon got a summer job with Metropolis Records in Philadelphia who released modern EBM and synthpop bands like Wolfshiem, VNV Nation and Covenant as well as classic darkwave band Clan Of Xymox and Bunnydrums. While attending Rutgers University, he became the Music Director for 90.3FM The Core for two years and held internships at Beggars Banquet/4AD/Matador and DFA Records. Moving to San Francisco in 2006, Josh fell into the disco revival with Honey Soundsystem and secured a weekly radio show on West Add Radio. His love of underground 80s music couldn't stay buried and pushed him to start Dark Entries, a record label specializing in re-issuing lost music from that time. From the first release in July 2009, Dark Entries now has 12 releases under their belt and many more in the pipeline...

Stereogamous are probably the gayest thing you'll do all week. Paul Mac and Jonny Seymour have collaborated / remixed / gone dancing with Kylie, George Michael, Jake Shears, Sia, JD Samson, LCD Soundsystem, The Presets and loads more. Don't hate though. They are actually lovely lads who are more into laughing, hugging and staying up late than being sceneious.  They have played in saunas and backrooms all over the planet as well as uber wanky festivals and also homo pride and leathery events around all the gay enclaves. This mix from Stereogamous  for EMB is from their residency at the most recent Trough Faggot Party in Melborune. Think bath house, macho tek, bottom 40, sling beat, and drug attic. They refuse to play straight weddings, until its equal, gurl.

Combining a burning passion for electronic music with nifty work behind the scenes he has crafted a solid niche for himself in today’s highly dynamic scene. Sitting back and letting things take their course is not part of his mantra. ??

Sergio ( Go Bang! ) - San Francisco

http://www.sergioaudio.com
http://www.facebook.com/sergioaudio
http://soundcloud.com/sergioaudio
http://facebook.com/GOBANGSF

Sergio began his DJing career in 1997 on KALX 90.7 FM in Berkeley, and began to flex his musical chops at live club gigs a couple of years after. As he continued to DJ, and especially after reading "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" in 2000, his 'musical vision' crystallized into wanting to present the spectrum of dance music - disco, house, funk, jazz, boogie and more - while preserving & paying respect to the vibe of the legendary clubs of Disco's Golden Age.

Born & raised in the East Bay, and having moved to San Francisco in 2001, Sergio is proud of the San Francisco Bay Area's rich dance music past and especially focuses on keeping our City's traditions & history alive. His DJing style draws inspiration from legendary Chicago DJ & producer Derrick Carter, San Francisco legend and party partner Steve Fabus, and the one & only Larry Levan. He strives to keep the proud tradition of the DJ "speaking to the dancer" alive - through the music, lights, and other atmospheric elements of the dancefloor & club.

In 2005, he was chosen as the New Times (SF Weekly/East Bay Express) "DJ Breakthrough" and was invited to play at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami during the Winter Music Conference. In 2006, he was awarded the title of the SF Weekly's 2006 Music Awards "Best DJ." Most recently, he was voted BEST DJ in SF Weekly's 2010 Reader's Poll!

Through the monthly Go BANG! party he co-promotes and through other projects, he continues to pursue his passion of DJing and has been blessed to connect with others who share his love for the music and the proud tradition of San Francisco's dance music history.

dj Colin Gaff - Sydney, Australia

http://www.gaff72.com.au/

Historically Colin has been actively playing house music since Acid House started in 1988. Most of the money he earnt in the late 80’s and 90’s was spent on the latest vinyl he could get his hands on in the record shops in London. His obsession for dance music has always been unstoppable and was the main passion he carried to Sydney when he relocated in 1999.

His series of monthly podcasts which he launched in early 2010 have taken his listeners on an aural adventure giving them something to think about at home, the gym and on the dancefloor.

Colin is known for only playing music that he would dance to and endeavours to stay away from playing the more 'obvious' tunes.

His regular sets in Sydney and his enthusiasm for all the music which he plays have contributed to him having the opportunity to play at some great parties in Sydney in 2010. This allowed Colin to show party goers what he is made of - solid quality tunes that grab you and make you move.

“I still love finding ‘that wicked tune’ and watching the people react to it! “

A Journey through Chunky House, Progressive Beats and loads of Feeling, all wrapped up with a Warm finale. See you on the other side.

Deep House - Tech House

Dizzy Jee - Brussels, Belgium

http://www.dizzyjee.com

Bio, about me: I've started collecting records beginning of the 90's, every single place visited was good to find records. Quickly this passion growth and I've started to play in radio shows for the late night programs where only addicted were tuning on to listen some new amazing sounds. In 2004, I've started to play in Brussels (Belgium) from bars to bars and parties to parties. In 2006 I've landed at Le Belgica (in Brussels downtown gay district). It is the first dj bar in Brussels, where they filter beats and vibes for more than 20 years now. They have a great sound system and an absolutely amazing crowd ready to party ! These left me some really good memories of best parties ever like the annuals street parties or the special events where the bar and the street are over crowded! 2006 it is the years that I've started to play for private companies events powered by Pioneer, or Levis Europe. In 2008, I've played at the Noisy Boys parties (Le You) together with Olivier Gosseries (a Brussels long time running deejay). In August 2009, I've played also for Martini (Moscow, Russia). This was a 3 days photo shooting with the well know photographer Christophe Gilbert where he fix it on his camera; this resulted in an amazing advert. During the summer 2009, I've played in Antwerp (Belgium) at Cafe Capital together with Dj Prinz (Push It Records). It's one of the most underground and coolest place in Belgium, and back again summer 2010. In 2010 I took also a residency at Brussels T Dance, the Sundays afternoon parties, by the Naughty-Party. where I'm playing Hed-Kandi and Defected sounds together with the vocalist Sua Amoa.

Right from my record box, this mix contains tracks that I play for a warm up or for after parties that never ends ! The Mix is slow, deep, and sensual with some peak in tech, and contains some subliminal messages (listen it carefully to discover them !). It is also the sound that you can hear when I'm playing at Le Belgica where I'm resident since 2006.

Pee Play - San Francisco

http://www.honeysoundsystem.com

"DJ Pee Play possesses the sort of mentality that keeps San Francisco's club-and cultural-scene vital. When he saw a nightlife void, instead of bitching about it, he went after filling it. And when one bar told him no, he started up a whole collective of like-minded DJs to do forward-thinking events at other clubs, pulling like-minded music lovers into his hive.

Pee Play is a co-founder of Honey Soundsystem, a crew of party pros wanting to instigate an edgy alternative to the Castro scene. They've spread their vinyl across SOMA, the Tenderloin, and the world."

dj BluFish - Toronto, Canada

http://djblufish.podomatic.com

djBluFish is happy to present  a taste of his Fuze series remixed exclusively for EMB.

Fuze is a four part series of sets by djBluFish who returns to the decks in 2010 following a successful hiatus of studying sound engineering, music production and studio design. Anyone who has heard him live can attest to the energy, power and edge of his sound. For that reason, each is recorded live in Toronto from the new head quarters and production studio of his label: 3HAUS.

The Fuze series marks somewhat of a departure from the progressive/tribal gallop BluFish has been known for. Look for more lush and textured influences from names like Mauro Picotto, Loco Dice, Gel Abril, Diego Poblets, Adam Beyer & Alexi Delano, Extrawelt, Reboot and Radio Slave to name a few. The upcoming fourth and  final set will present original and collaborative pieces from 3HAUS.

This is your chance to catch up and retrace an evolution of a dj and his house.

Electronic Music Bears is proud to be hosting the House of Black Leather Podcast Series. For the next two weeks we will be featuring various DJs and Producers involved in what promises to be a legendary event Sunday September 26, Folsom Street Fair weekend.

For our first installment we bring you

Nikola Baytala - San Francisco - Deep, Tech & Minimal House

San Francisco DJ Nikola Baytala has become a crucial component of the minimal-techno collective known as Kontrol. But don't typecast him as a one-dimensional droid with a M-nus Records logo tattoo. He's been exploring the upper echelons of the techno/house continuum since the early '90s (including the last 10 years at The Top, a weekly event hosted by S.W.A.T., aka Special Weapons and Tactics), gaining a reputation as a DJ's DJ, with acclaim coming from house-music legends like Derrick Carter and Doc Martin. Moreover, Baytala's list of musical influences and loves is vast, eclectic, and impeccable. The following roll call just scratches the surface: dub/reggae (Lee "Scratch" Perry), jazz (Pharoah Sanders), world (Ravi Shankar, Mulatu Astatke), funk (Cymande), soul (Bill Withers), hiphop (Gang Starr), Krautrock (Can), electro (Egyptian Lover, Kraftwerk), disco (DJ Harvey), Latin (Tito Puente), soundtrack/new age (Vangelis), rock (Steely Dan), post-punk (ESG, Liquid Liquid), and post-rock (Outhud). As for his bread and butter, Baytala similarly displays excellent judgment, with a heavy preference for quality-pushers like Jeff Mills, Gas, Monolake, Robert Hood, Theo Parrish, and Mr. Fingers. When you see a DJ possess such wide-ranging, outstanding taste, it instills confidence that he/she will rarely, if ever, veer into wackness. Baytala clearly has put many hours of study into his craft, and it's paid off with smooth mixes and world-class track selection. Besides his formidable technical skills and profound knowledge, Baytala reportedly exudes a lot of personality and passion behind the decks, which must have served him well while opening for acts like Jane's Addiction. Everything I've heard by Baytala suggests that his sets avoid the supposed pitfalls of minimal dance music. They're kinetic, dynamic, and, of course, cheese-free. I can't believe I've only just recently found out about this mensch.

A "powerhouse" line-up for the opening weekend of the brand new Public Works two story warehouse nightclub in the Mission District of San Francisco.

Alexis Blair Penney - San Francisco

http://www.myspace.com/alexispenneymusic

http://www.soundcloud.com/alexis-penney/

Alexis is a San Francisco-based writer/performer/artist/DJ/personality originally from Kansas City. Growing up in the suburbs of Kansas he was exposed to a wide range of music - his father is a classically trained pianist, his mother a vocalist - and has always been fascinated with the power of music to influence any situation, whether it's playing exactly the right mix cd at a party or djing the perfect cuts to a crowd. Disco was his gateway into dance music, which evolved into a passionate fixation on House, Italo and everything in between, with an emphasis on gay-interest, diva vocalists and the dark, dramatic and weird - anything with real emotion behind it. He became a DJ out of necessity, after being granted the oppurtunity to throw a party at the legendary Aunt Charlie's Lounge immediately upon moving to San Francisco in 2008, knowing the vibe he wanted but not knowing the DJ for the job, and hasn't looked back since. His first party Thing Night ran monthly from June '08 to January '10, when it mutated and streamlined into the weekly High Fantasy which he throws with the talented Myles Cooper. In addition to High Fantasy, Alexis was the resident DJ of the late Club Club You're Dead, is the resident DJ of Otter Pops and has DJ'd O.K. Hole, Nacht Music, Vienetta Discoteque and Chaser, among others. He performs drag, is pursuing music as a vocalist and maintains a trashy, gay punk nightlife and culture blog (www.soresoresore.com) and loves poppers.

Jens Irish - Denver, CO

http://soundcloud.com/jensirish
http://jirish.podomatic.com

Jens Irish, for the past five years, has quietly established himself as a name to be reckoned with in the Denver Colorado underground music scene. With his sets primarily known for developing a sustained, intimate connection with the audience through the slow buildup of hypnotic, moody elements and a focus on melodic interaction, Jens’ fundamental motivation is to impart upon the crowd a coherent, systematic journey into sound that plays itself out over the entire performance.

2009 saw Jens inducted into the P.U.N.C.H.I.S. collective, a group of passionate Denver DJs and music enthusiasts, founded with the intention of creating wholly unique, forward-thinking dance parties, and motivated by an obsession for the latest in cutting edge, underground electronic music sampled from around the world. Quickly assembling a dedicated following, P.U.N.C.H.I.S. now stands as one of Denver’s best kept secrets in Deep/Tech House, and Techno, and is currently hosting the Zoologiko party every Friday night at Beta, voted #2 night club in the US by DJ Mag in 2009.

Drawing inspiration from within the P.U.N.C.H.I.S. framework, Jens’ sound has steadily continued to evolve. Injecting his unique spirit and personality into every note, transition and programming decision, he tells a story with each set…and definitely one that’s best experienced live!

50 Pound Note - San Francisco
http://www.50poundnote.com/

I started as a DJ in 1990 while I was working for my college radio station. I learned how to beat-match the old fashioned way, with two turntables and two copies of New Order’s Blue Monday. Over the years I’ve held residencies in several cities, including Louisville, Fort Lauderdale, and here in San Francisco. I spin regularly for the Bearracuda parties in Portland and Seattle, and later this year I’ll be adding Canada, New Zealand, and Australia to England as the list of countries where I’ve had the chance to showcase my work.

About the mix:
The title of this mix is "Summer of '83". I wanted to build it around a specific feel, focusing on new artists who are using older analog sounds, but also throw in a couple of tracks that actually are from 1983. Summertime in San Francisco is usually cold and foggy, so this is one last warm farewell to a summer that didn't really happen.

Track List:
00. Intro
01. Civic Transit (Anoraak LAX Remix) by Keenhouse
02. Love Saves The Day (Mario Basanov Vocal Remake) by Kaine featuring Kathy Diamond
03. Eagle by Bottin
04. Count Your Lucky Stars (The Diogenes Club Remix) by Casio Social Club
05. Dr. Funk by Sidechains
06. Autodrive (50 Pound Note Re-edit) by Herbie Hancock
07. Confusion by New Order
08. Baby I'm Yours (Aeroplane Remix) by Breakbot
09. 121 In Luv by Casio Social Club
10. Survivor (Keenhouse Remix) by Fare Soldi

House & Techno

spaceotter
http://www.spaceotter.com
http://soundcloud.com/djspaceotter

I began DJing unexpectedly in 2007 at a radical faerie gathering in central Oregon. A classically trained pianist, gigging drummer, and an avid dancer obsessed with electronic music, I never expected to be a DJ. But some of the best journeys are the ones unexpected: one crack at the decks and I was hooked.  Since then, DJing has become a progression of house parties in the Pacific Northwest to playing at Burning Man and increasingly gigging in the Seattle area.

Musically, I'm a drummer and instrumentalist first. Having grown up on jazz fusions like Weather Report's "Heavy Weather," and new wave like Thomas Dolby's "Golden Age of Wireless" my tastes are quite catholic. I never felt the need to choose between genres, or divide electronic and acoustic musics--or, for that matter, the necessity of compulsory vocals.  Because of this, house music was a revelation:  a "vertical" music tradition, focusing less on narrating a story and more on repeating a set of ecstatic sounds and multicultural rhythms in order to inspire transcendence.  That transcendence--the kind that does not engage the narrative, controlling, verbal mind--is where I place my attention.  My project as a DJ is to set the stage for ecstatic states in others that DJ heroes like Derrick Carter, Carl Cox, Doc Martin, Jëno, Jerry Bonham, John Kelley, David Harness, DJ Dan, and Donald Glaude have created for me.

About the mix:
The Electronic Music Bears mix comes while I've got the sounds of Burning Man bouncing around my head, and am helping put finishing touches on a new theme camp Discopolis, at 7:30 and Edinburgh (http://www.campdiscopolis.com). ; It's thereby tilted toward sounds I love on the playa--big dark techno, soaring progressive, whomp electro, shouting tribal, and outrageous house.  If the mix were a sandwich, the buns would be techno, the patty would be house, and it would have a tribal garnish and a playful electro pickle, served at an all night free sandwich stand somewhere in Black Rock City.

Danceteria on Facebook
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Danceteria-by-DiscoPup/47508821614

Discopolis
http://www.campdiscopolis.com

Richard 'DiscoPup' Dupler began spinning music waaaaay back in the mid-1980s in his native New Orleans, but had to give it up when life interrupted the party. When the DJ-ing bug bit again, it was 2003. He is the quintessential desktop DJ, constructing his mixes, sometimes literally, beat by beat. Nothing on the fly, almost nothing happens by accident. Everything you hear is on purpose, put there for a reason.

He calls his podcast, Danceteria, 'dance music for the brain. It is rarely genre-specific, though Richard's tastes tend to lean toward the disco/house/trance spectrum, and there are regular forays into chill-out and classic dance worlds. The name itself was born out of combining "dance" with "cafeteria." The idea being that whatever Richard thinks is good at the time goes into the mix. (It was not until much later that he discovered that he had not been the first person to use "Danceteria." Not by a long shot.)

"Constructing the mixes on a computer allows me to do things that would be nearly impossible in a club setting. Like dropping in funny quotes from movies, for example. Or just completely twisting the levels to create an entirely new aural experience. A real DJ is simply too busy queueing up his next tracks to bother with bells and whistles like that. Danceteria is built specifically for your iPod, meant to be heard, listened to, with earphones."

Lately, Richard has been producing his own remixes, he calls them Reworx. "It's amazing what you can do when provided with the separate parts of a song, a little imagination, and some powerful software." He is proud to be premiering, exclusive to EMB, a Reworx of a brand new track from San Francisco's own ejector.

DiscoPup is a moniker Richard took on at Burning Man in 2004. And while he continues to produce Danceteria under that name, nowadays on the playa he's simply known as Disco. He dedicates this mix to his fellow Burners, past, present and future, and sends a special shout-out to the members of Discopolis.

This, like all Danceterias, is an enhanced podcast. In iTunes, open the artwork window to see the covers for each song. You can also skip directly to a specific track using the Chapters menu. The same functionality can found on your iPod or iPhone.
